I Need A "GPS For Dummies" Book March 7, 2010 P. Jones (Texas Panhandle) My husband and I are always venturing into the backwoods and onto strange and scenic waterways to fish and we thought it was time to invest in a GPS unit and enter the 21st century, so we bought the Oregon 400T. I think it has excellent features, but I don't know, because it does not come with any kind of operations manual. We downloaded the PDF file from (...) and printed our own, but it seems the directions in the manual are very sparse and don't go into any kind of detail. We know NOTHING about GPS units and are finding this process of learning how to use the unit to be very trying. We have spent several hours and 3 days on the internet trying to figure out how to get the unit to show contouring detail. We finally called Garmin and the techie was very knowledgeable and helpful, but couldn't stay on the line with us greenhorns forever, so we had to hang up.
We think we will enjoy using the unit if we ever figure out how to use it and figure out what all it can do. At this point, we are totally frustrated and it's sitting in the box on the kitchen table. We've followed the instructions for "planning a route" from point B to point C (with our present location being point A) about 50 times. The unit will only give us directions from point A (our present location) to point B or point C. I'm sure we'll figure it out eventually if we don't give up and send the whole mess back.
Seemed easier when we used a paper map!(...)!
Great Hardware and User Interface, but Maps are stripped down March 2, 2010 Shaun (Spokane, WA, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pros: Great HW, Touchscreen, User Interface
Cons: Included map is stripped down and can't be edited w/ PC, requires special car charger.
This would be a 5-Star review had Garmin not stripped down the maps included with the unit. I bought the Oregon 400t because everything I read said it came with the Topo US 100K maps, which if you explore on the Garmin website has many useful points of interest (POIs) for hiking, camping, boating such as various camp grounds, boat launches, marinas, and forest service landmarks. In fact, the Garmin Topo US Topo 2008 maps do include these POIs (which is used as the demo on Garmin's website).
However, there is no mention that the version included pre-loaded on the unit is Topo US 100K v2 which is about 2/3 the size where these POIs have been removed. There are still mountain peaks, schools, and city parks, but really nothing useful for camping/boating near where I live. I don't understand the logic of stripping out all the outdoor camping and boating POIs and leaving the schools and city parks (if you have problems navigating city parks and schools, you need more than GPS). This of course means you get to buy more maps, thanks Garmin!
Also, even though you're buying a preloaded map you can't edit, add way points, or mark trails on the map using the Mapsource or Basecamp PC programs. So if you want to mark waypoints and trails, don't plan on using your Laptop. Save some money and buy GPS without preloaded maps and buy the maps separate.
Another important point, Garmin's have a proprietary charger for cars that power the unit without setting it in PC mode. The car/nav kits are $40 from Garmin, but ChargerCity makes a great charger for $12 part # CLA_A2 that does the job just fine.
On the plus side the Garmin hardware is great, good reception and excellent time to first fix from either a warm or cold start. The unit works well in my truck and even in the house I get decent coverage. The touchscreen interface works smoothly and you get a good size screen on a compact GPS unit.
Also make sure to pick up some AA NiMH rechargeable batteries and a screen protector.
Almost 5 stars February 10, 2010 R. Xiong (USA) I would give it a five stars if it will stays on when switch from battery power to car power cord. It will restart itself and after a while it will shutdown which is very dumb especial you are driving. Yes, screen display is also horrible. You can't see when you're in the sun. Other than these little stuff, it's a awesome device.
Well Worth The Investment February 6, 2010 James Anderson (Colorado, USA) I have been using my Garmin 12 for years and finally decided it was time to upgrade after taking a GPS class with others who had newer GPS units. After a lot of research, I decided on the Oregon 400T. I am a hunter, hiker, biker, and skier, so knowing exactly where I am is VERY important. What I didn't realize is this unit is great for when I am in my car. I purchased a Garmin Nuvi for my wife and found that my Oregon has some of the features that her Nuvi has. The electronic compass is a BIG advantage over my old GPS and the reception is better too. The touch screen is a big bonus! Ease of use? No need to even say something here -- it's that easy!
I will admit that I am biased towards Garmin products, but after picking Garmin years ago and being out of the reviewing process for a few years, I still rate the Garmin units as the best.
Handy for hiking in the dark February 4, 2010 Roadrunner (Arizona) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I selected this Oregon 400T GPS because it was highly ranked by Consumers Reports. I wanted it for hiking and for use on my two-seat ATV. It is light and small, which is good, though the screen is small also. But the screen is unreadable in daylight, even in shade. It is too dim to see much outdoors, even when plugged into the lighter socket giving it a continuous power supply (get the Nav kit for the cord and mount). It is especially bad if you are at higher altitudes (4000 ft) where the map software gives the maps a darker green background. And in the ten years since I bought my last Garmin, the company had done nothing to improve their manuals. After recording a track thru a 32 mile trip, I found no way to save and name the route for future recall. The manual doesn't mention it, other than to say how to record tracks, but the sales literature says you can save 50 tracks. It just doesn't say how. This is a very fundamental operation; it shouldn't be this hard. I went to their tech support website and sent them a question on the form supplied there. They say you get an answer in two or three days. It has been two weeks with no response. Maybe they don't know how to save a track either. I also found out that they don't tell you (unless you have a problem) that the unit doesn't work with a bigger micro SD card than 4GB. Because, they said, future units might be able to do that. So they don't want to have to redo the literature later. So far, however, despite their warning, the 8GB chip seems to be ok. I downloaded several states from their (extra cost) 24k software. Once they explained how. You will need the 24k data to see trails. The 100k data that comes with the unit is fine for pavement, but has only some forest service roads. And few trails hiker will want to follow. To get the higher resolution maps, you pay $80-$90 more for three or four states. Southwest has AZ, MN, UT and CO. Middle West has WY, MT and ID. You can also get the National Parks in groups. You can buy these on micro SD cards, or on a CD. Get the CDs, you will want to download the maps to your computer. If you don't, you can't share tracks between the unit and your computer. Assuming you can figure out how to save a track...
