2 out of 5 stars Navigon 2100 max   January 6, 2009
Camy (Westminster, MD United States)
I bought this gps because of the screen graphics. It was easy to see and I liked it in general. I returned it because I could not read the printing on the screen. The printing was too small to be seen from the drivers seat. We went on a trip and my son put his tom tom right beside the navigon. I was in the back seat and I could read his tom tom. He is very technical savey and he had trouble navigating through the options. This is a small draw back but it only had one voice option. In short--I would not recommend this unit.

5 out of 5 stars This works GREAT! Highly Recommended.   January 4, 2009

I currently have the Honda Navigation but needed something when I went to Washington DC. My husband bought me this and showed me how to use it in literally 5 minutes. I used it for one day before taking it on my trip, and it was VERY user friendly. I am easily frustrated and don't do well with new technology but I was able to use this to get all around DC, Baltimore, Hershey, and York without any problems. It made my trip so much less stressful and you can't beat the price. Also, I now use it in conjunction with the Honda GPS to avoid traffic. It saves all the previous destinations and has a lot of addresses that still aren't incluced in my 2007 Honda GPS. Next time I buy a car I won't spend the $1500 and $200/year for the updates because the Navigon is better portable technology.

5 out of 5 stars Great GPS   December 31, 2008

I purchased the Navigon 2100 on 12-18-08 and had it overnighted as I was leaving on a long trip on 12-25. I found this GPS to be not much short of fantastic. It found the destinations easily without even putting the entire address in. It recalculated routes very quickly and the routing was perfect for me. As far as POI, I usually never use them, but did try a couple and found them to be OK for my purposes. The bundled traffic and updates were downloaded easily, and work perfectly. I used the dash mount and it had NO vibration. My wife likes to watch it also, so we left the left/right swivel a bit loose, and we could swing it back and forth easily. I tried the window mount, but my windshield was too far away - it did hold very well though. The dash mount did not come off on a 2700 mile trip. I really like everything about it, and for the price, I am completely satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars Close, but could be better   December 31, 2008
Zee (Silicon Valley)
I wanted to give this item 3 stars, but their very good tech support boosted my rating; 3.5 would be my rating; this is why.
The basic design of this product is great. It's easy enough to lean and use and has very nice features. The larger screen is easy enough to read. In metropolitan areas, the device will get to my desired locations. But it looses it's mind in rural areas; specially on twisty roads; it keeps thinking that I have left the road when I am still on the correct route. A big thumbs down to not working in Hawaii. I like to vacation there and being able to use it would make my vacations that much better. I like the update feature, FreshMaps, but they take some time to download.

3 out of 5 stars Good value, has some drawbacks   December 29, 2008

So I've compared this item head to head with a Garmin 350, and here are the differences that I see:

Advantage for Navigon:
1. Wider screen without paying an arm and a leg.
2. Virtual 3D shows which lane you actually should be in, and freezes the picture to show you ahead of time. Very nice. (Look at image above for this).
3. Voice is very loud - I actually only had to put it at about 1/2 the volume when traveling 65 mph. (Garmin's was at the maximum voice level).
4. Lifetime map updates.

Disadvantage for Navigon:
1. Buttons are hard to press. I have somewhat large fingers and it is just about impossible for me to type on it. Other men may have the same problem. I had to use my fingernail, and even then it took me retyping everything twice to get it.
2. Slower to respond in route recalculations. The Garmin caught a missed turn quickly, and was able to have me turn at the next street. The Navigon had me turn at the next street, but the recalculation was slow enough that by the time it posted the directions, I was already past the next turn. It did this four times, for each of the next four blocks while I was driving straight at 35 mph. It didn't update fast enough, so it really never told me to turn before the next street. At the end it just told me to turn around.
3. POI, POI, POI! I wanted to drive to a nearby Howard Johnson's. I couldn't just put in Howard Johnson's, it first wanted to know what type of business it was. And then what city it was in. The HoJo was about 5 miles away, but it wasn't listed on 'Nearby'. Fine because I knew what city it was in, but if you didn't know what city your desire was in, you really lose effectiveness. If I got off the interstate and searched for the nearest Ramada Inn, and the Ramada was 6 miles away, it won't be finding that one.

So distinct differences between the two. The inability to find nearby business and the difficult in typing really limit its effectiveness though. After using one for a bit, I feel the nearby locations is a main feature of the GPS. I didn't feel this way before - I looked at it just to find directions from point A to point B. But those POI offer you the freedom to detour, and stop along the way at the types and locations you love. I would like to know that my favorite sandwich stop is at the next exit down the road, and I'm afraid the Navigon won't find that one.
