No repair available August 26, 2010 Duncan Ross (Magalia, CA USA) Besides being hard to use and unreadable in sunlight there is a bigger problem:
Magellan will NOT repair these units. If out of warranty they will only replace it with a reconditioned unit and charge you a fortune!
I would recommend this GPS August 18, 2010 Raymond Brown (San Rafael,CA) The firmware upgrades make this a terrific deal. Very high end technology for a bargain basement price.
Don't waste your money August 15, 2010 Fred (Columbia, SC) I am a big fan of Magellan GPS for the auto and own one for each car. I have a Crossover, and expected this to be a step up. I read reviews explaining problems, but several others stated that an upgrade to the fireware made them go away. This has not been the case with me. Mine was shipped with the latest firmware but it locks up almost every time it is connected to the computer, requiring me to unplug and remove the batteries. Since the installed basemap is worthless, you have to connect in order to load maps. I have tried to reload the firmware, but the unit locks up during the process. The instructions included with the unit were almost worthless and the ones online obviously refer to a earlier version of the software, since it describes buttons and commands that aren't there. The big selling point is the connection with National Geographic TOPO maps. The one map that I have been able to get on the unit is nothing to brag about. The obsolete Crossover has a map that can zoom much closer. The GPS performs well when it is not connected to the computer. Perhaps I'm not as bright as some of the other reviewers, but the menu system is not nearly as easy to use or as intuitive as they said. All in all, this was a big disappointment.
worst gadget June 29, 2010 R. Kerry (Tucson, AZ United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This thing is the worst electonic gadget I have ever owned. It locks frequently and will not unlock unless you take out the batteries, it would not find a way point and is generally useless to me. I am sending it back on warranty.
Buy a Garmin GPS 60CSX June 25, 2010 AVID HIKER I bought the Magellan Triton 1500 because it was such a good deal. After I made the purchase I continued to research the product and there were several poor reviews of the product mainly involving the software that comes with the unit and Magellans' poor customer service which is based in India. After many attempts to install the software via my 2007 model Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows Vista, I could not get the computer to recognize the Magellan, so I could upload the required software in the GPS. The Magellan Triton 1500 is a piece of junk and customer service might as well be on another planet. The customer service people just passed the buck and made it sound as if it was my computer. I have never had problems with Windows Vista.I sent the Magellan 1500 Triton GPS back to Amazon and bought a Garmin GPS 60CSX from REI on sale for 199.00 and had absolutely no problems with the unit or software. Had it working and loaded with required software in 30 minutes. Garmin also has U.S. based customer service representatives which are knowledgeable, professional, and will spend time with any questions you have about their products. I have worked in a computer based work environment since 1993 and consider my self to be very technically literate. Magellan has no right to sell a product that does't seem to have gone through much beata testing.
